Cloud Certification Showdown:
Azure vs AWS

Cloud Certification Showdown: Azure vs AWS Certification

It’s the ultimate showdown between tech giants Microsoft and Amazon, competing for dominance in the world of cloud computing. When it comes to IT certifications, however, the question of Azure vs AWS certification is a common one.

Both certifications are widely recognized and can lead to stronger career prospects. In addition, each option allows you to demonstrate proven cloud knowledge. As a result, when comparing Azure vs AWS certification, career seekers should think like business leaders. For example, consider how either an AWS or Azure certification can best meet the needs of a business in an industry that interests you.

AWS: Cloud Services Leader

AWS (Amazon Web Services) certification is designed for professionals pursuing a career in cloud computing. In particular, startups and fast-growing companies in tech, retail, and media often rely on AWS, making certification especially valuable.

AWS certification has four levels:

  • Foundational: AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner is considered an entry-level certification that covers basic cloud concepts, including AWS core services, security, architecture, pricing, and support. Additionally, AWS Certified AI Practitioner expands this focus to include AI and machine learning.
  • Associate: AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate is the next step for cloud practitioners, with a focus on designing AWS systems and gaining a deeper understanding of AWS services. Similarly, other certifications at this level include AWS Certified Developer – Associate and AWS Certified SysOps Administrator – Associate.
  • Professional: Certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional and AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional are intended for professionals who design, deploy, and manage complex environments.
  • Specialty: IT professionals can specialize in areas such as Security, Advanced Networking, and Machine Learning.

AWS certifications are valid for three years. After that, renewal typically requires passing the latest version of your previous exam or completing a higher-level certification.

Career prospects with AWS certification include cloud architect, cloud systems administrator, cloud consultant, network engineer, software development engineer, and cloud data engineer.

Microsoft Azure: Integration Is Its Strength

Earning certification in Azure is a smart move, especially given its continued expansion into the enterprise market. For instance, larger organizations in healthcare, government, and finance value how easily Azure integrates with other Microsoft products.

Microsoft offers four levels of Azure certification based on knowledge and expertise:

  • Fundamentals: Ideal for professionals starting in cloud computing, the Microsoft Certified: Azure Fundamentals certification covers basic cloud concepts and Azure services.
  • Associate: IT professionals with experience as administrators, developers, or security engineers can stand out as Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate.
  • Expert: Certifications such as Azure Solutions Architect Expert and Azure DevOps Engineer Expert are designed for professionals who implement, design, and manage Azure solutions.
  • Specialty: These certifications focus on IoT (Internet of Things) development, database technologies, and other specialized areas.

Azure’s foundational certification does not expire. However, most other Azure certifications are valid for one year. Fortunately, you can renew them after six months by passing a renewal assessment through Microsoft Learn.

Becoming Azure certified can open doors to a growing career path in cloud computing. In other words, it can help you qualify for roles such as AI Engineer, Security Engineer, DevOps Engineer, Data Scientist, and Solutions Architect.

Azure vs AWS: Who Wins?

Ultimately, both AWS and Azure certifications benefit IT professionals by expanding technical expertise. However, from a business perspective, choosing between Azure vs AWS depends on meeting specific organizational needs.

For example, some companies may require specific certifications from job candidates. Therefore, career seekers should evaluate a prospective employer’s technology environment and determine how their expertise can add value.
