342,000 Jobs Gone.
Are You Next — Or Are You Ready?

AI skills training for job seekers

The April 2026 jobs report just confirmed what many workers have quietly feared: AI is reshaping the workforce — fast. If you're a job seeker or currently employed in a tech-adjacent role, AI skills training for job seekers isn't a nice-to-have. It's your survival plan.

What the Jobs Report Actually Revealed

The headline number — 115,000 jobs added in April — was weak. But the stat that should stop every job seeker in their tracks is buried in the details:

The information services sector has shed 342,000 jobs since November 2022. That's an 11% wipeout of the entire sector in just three and a half years. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes this trend directly coincides with the rise of AI.

It doesn't stop there:

  • 4.9 million Americans are working part-time because they can't find full-time work — up 445,000 in a single month
  • Labor force participation dropped to 61.8%, the lowest since October 2021
  • 475,000 discouraged workers have stopped looking entirely
  • Average wages came in below expectations

This isn't a temporary dip. This is a structural shift.

Who Is AI Actually Displacing?

AI isn't replacing the lowest-skill jobs first. It's replacing knowledge workers — the administrative roles, data-entry positions, content-creation jobs, and tech-support functions that defined the "good jobs" of the past decade.

Smarter workers aren't replacing the workers getting hurt. They're being replaced by other workers who know how to use AI tools.

That's the bifurcation happening in today's job market:

  • Workers who can use AI → still employed, earning premiums, getting hired
  • Workers who can't → underemployed, part-time, or out of the market entirely

The Job Seeker Action Plan

If you are actively job searching — or worried about your current role — here are three actions that matter you can do to help AI-proof your career.

  1.  Add AI credentials to your resume. Hiring managers are screening for AI fluency. If your resume doesn't show it, you are being filtered out before a human ever reads your application. Certifications like the Certified AI Power User credential signal to employers that you're not just aware of AI — you can use it to drive results.
  2. Learn Microsoft Copilot. Copilot is now embedded in Microsoft 365 — the suite that runs most businesses. Workers who can use Copilot to automate reports, write emails faster, analyze data, and summarize meetings are immediately more valuable. Workers who can't are a cost center. Companies are already making hiring and retention decisions based on this.
  3. Don't wait for your employer to train you. Most companies are moving too slowly on AI training. By the time your organization rolls out a mandatory training program, the workers who got ahead on their own will have already been promoted, retained, or hired away. Take the initiative now.

The AI Training Institute at Computer Coach

Computer Coach has been in workforce development for close to 30 years. We've seen every wave of workforce disruption — from the PC revolution to the internet, from outsourcing to automation. This one is different in one critical way: the pace.

Previous technology shifts gave workers years to adapt. AI is giving workers months.

That's why we built our AI Workforce Training Institute. The programs are specifically for working adults and job seekers — not developers, not data scientists, but people who need practical, applicable skills they can use on Monday morning.

Our Certified AI Power User program teaches you how to work with AI tools across the most common workplace applications. Our Microsoft Copilot training gets you fluent in the AI already baked into the tools your employer uses right now.

These are not theoretical courses. They are job-ready skills.

The Bottom Line

The April jobs report is a warning. But it's also an opportunity. The workers who treat this moment as a wake-up call — who invest in AI skills training now — will be in the strongest position in the job market by the end of 2026.

342,000 jobs are gone. The question is what you do next.
