Conducting thorough research, both online and offline, can help you gain a clearer picture of your target companies, industries, and trends. One effective method to enhance your job-seeking efforts is through informational interviews. These conversations with leaders or employees at leading companies can provide valuable insights and help you navigate your career path more effectively. Here’s how to make the most of these opportunities.

Do Your Homework

Before diving into an informational interview, it’s essential to do some preliminary research. Look up the company’s website, recent news, and top hits from internet searches. This will help you avoid asking questions that can be easily answered online and demonstrate your genuine interest in the company.

Ask Thoughtful Questions
When preparing questions for your informational interview, avoid basic inquiries that could be answered with a quick web search. Instead, focus on gaining deeper insights that can only be provided by someone within the company. Here are some thoughtful questions to consider:

  1. Team Dynamics: "Can you tell me a little about the team you'd be joining if I were selected for this role?" This question helps you understand the team structure and dynamics.
  2. Role Expectations: "Are there particular gaps on the team that you are hoping to fill with the person you select for this position?" This shows you are thinking about how you can add value.
  3. Work Culture: Rather than asking a generic question about the company culture, consider specifics: "Does the company support work/life balance and volunteering with paid days off?" or "Are there Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) available?"
  4. Growth Opportunities: "What kind of internal development and growth opportunities does the company offer?" and "Is there a focus on internal mobility?"
  5. Industry Experience: "How would you describe your experience in this industry?" and "What trends do you see shaping the future of this industry?"

Personalize the Conversation
While it’s important to gather information, make sure to personalize the conversation to build a genuine connection. Here’s how:

  • Follow Up on Answers: If you ask about company culture, follow up with a specific example: "Can you provide an example of how the company supports professional development?"
  • Seek Personal Insights: "What has your personal experience been like at this company?" or "What motivated you to join and stay with this company?"
  • Explore Career Pathways: "What career paths have others taken from your position?"

Be Respectful of Their Time
Informational interviews should be concise. Aim to keep the conversation to about 15-20 minutes. Plan your questions to be clear and direct, allowing time for one follow-up question. Respecting their time shows professionalism and consideration.

Leave a Positive Impression
To make a lasting impression, leave them with something memorable about yourself. Share an interesting fact, a recent accomplishment, or a unique aspect of your career journey. This will help you stand out in their mind.

Continue the Relationship
Building a relationship beyond the informational interview is crucial. Here’s how to do it:

  • Share Events: If you know of an upcoming event that might interest them, mention it and see if they’d like to attend with you.
  • Follow Up: Within 24 hours, send a thank-you note expressing your gratitude for their time. Mention at least one specific takeaway from your conversation to show you were engaged and attentive.

  • Keep it Positive

By focusing on building genuine connections, being prepared and respectful, and maintaining a positive attitude, you can make the most of informational interviews and significantly enhance your career exploration efforts.
